Everybody. Everyday.

Engaging in physical activity everyday has a powerful and positive impact on an individual’s health now and in the future. The benefits of leading an active life are unbelievable! Which of these benefits would you like to experience?
Increase your chance of living longer.
              Sleep better at night.
Get to or stay at a healthy weight.
              Have stronger muscles and bones.
Be with friends and meet new people.
              Reduce risk of becoming depressed.
              Be in shape.
              Enjoy yourself and have fun.

Establishing a lifelong habit of physical activity ensures that you can enjoy these benefits and many more. Our newest wellness incentive campaign, Everybody. Everyday. aims to inspire individuals to be active every day. And you are officially invited to enroll in this unique wellness challenge!

A 6-week campaign, Everybody. Everyday. Begins Monday, September 12, 2011, and challenges participants to establish a routine of intentionally scheduling daily activity into each week. Developing a lifelong habit of daily exercise is the goal.

And the really cool thing about this challenge is that YOU pick the activity, how long you want to exercise, how hard you want to exercise, and when. The emphasis is placed simply on planning a weekly schedule and establishing a frequency of exercising seven days a week.

Along the way, several key pillars of behavior change success are introduced to further support your efforts to be active daily. Sign up by Friday, September 9, 2011, and you will receive a Wellness Lunch Bag.  Individuals who successfully complete the challenge take home a T-shirt or MP3 Player.

Cross country walking challenge
          Chicago to Denver

The Denver challenge started on Monday, June 20th  and ran for eight weeks.  We arrived in Denver on Sunday, August 14th where we will celebrate our arrival on Friday, August 18th

We utilized the individual/team tracking sheets that were created on our last trip.  And Each team could have up to 6 members.

We didn't have a lot of time to get ready for the beginning of our walk but everyone laced up and started right away.

Check in next week for the winners....

Remember… Walking has been proven to provide numerous health benefits like reduced blood pressure and cholesterol and increased cardiovascular endurance and bone strength.  It’s also a great way to burn calories and loose weight.
The best thing about walking is that it is a low-risk exercise.  Need one more reason to walk?  Consider that a study of 13,000 people found that those who walked for 30 minutes a day had a lower risk of premature death than those who rarely walked!

2011 Bike/Walk to Work Day
Friday, May 20, 2011 was bike or walk to work day in Claremont. This is the day we ask people to park their cars and bike or walk to work, take public transit or combine any two or three of these transportation ideas.

The month of May is National Bike Month/Commute Green in New Hampshire.  This year Commute Green NH challenged employer, municipalities and schools to reduce 50,000 vehicle miles traveled as part of the statewide challenge.

The event was held in other towns around the region and the low turnout was blamed on the weather conditions.  Lebanon, Hanover, Enfield and Claremont still had hearty souls who observed the day.  In Claremont the Bike/Walk to work festivities started with a light breakfast of fresh fruit and breakfast bars donated by Valley Regional Hospital, pastries donated by Java Cup and water/juice supplied by Claremont Wellness Committee.

For those who did not own a bicycle, Community Alliance gave anyone a free ride in exchange for a can of food to be donated to the food pantries of Sullivan County.

Door prizes were bike lights, pedometers, event sox, and a gift certificate from Cycle Depot.  Employees of Claremont Cycle Depot, 12 Plains Road, did tire and bike checks and adjustments.

Thank you to all who participated.  Next year we are expecting a bigger event as the Greater Chamber of Commerce plans to join in the festivities.

A Special Thanks.......
The Wellness Committee for the City of Claremont hosted a Health and Wellness Fair on Friday, April 15.

The focus of this year’s theme was on preventative care and providing employees/retirees and their families, with information and knowledge of health and wellness opportunities that can impact positively on each individual’s quality of life.

We hope to again offer this program in the future, but are anticipating partnering with others in the community to make this event more rewarding.

The Committee would like to thank the many businesses and organizations that gave up their time in support of our vision.  Many of these businesses also offered gifts and door prize to our guests.   Those businesses that we especially wish to thank are:

Representatives from Colonial Life, Combined Insurance, LTC Financial Partners, Claremont Farmers Market, Twisted Fitness, Reaching Roots Yoga, Granny’s Garden, Hannaford Supermarket, Weight Watchers, Yvonne Fulciniti (Certified Holistic Health Coach), Community Dental Care of Claremont, Valley Regional Hospital & Conn. Valley Homecare (who provided screenings for cholesterol, blood glucose and blood pressure), Claremont Parks & Recreation, Fiske Free Library, Claremont Police Department, Local Government Center, Claremont Lions Club (who screened sight), BodyFit Therapies (who provided back and neck massages), Deb’s Chocolate Delights, Dionne Family Chiropractic PLLC, Claremont Cycle Depot and Lambert Auto,  and finally, to Chief Chase, for allowing  the Claremont Fire Department to hosts our event.

Thank you again for your generosity, and for showcasing the 2011 Health and Wellness Fair.
